What is denture reline?

Denture relining is a dental procedure that involves reshaping or resurfacing the underside of a denture to improve its fit and comfort. Over time, dentures may become loose or uncomfortable to wear due to changes in the jawbone, gum tissue, or the denture itself. Denture relining can help address these issues without the need for a complete denture replacement.

There are two main types of denture relining:

  1. Hard denture reline: This is the most common type of denture relining technique. It involves removing a thin layer of the denture material and replacing it with a new layer of acrylic resin. This process provides a more precise fit and improves stability and retention. Hard denture relines typically require the patient to be without their dentures for a short period, usually a few hours or overnight, to allow the new material to harden.

  2. Soft denture reline: Soft relines are preferred in cases where patients have thin or sensitive gum tissues. A liquid or gel-like material is applied to the tissue-facing surface of the denture, creating a cushioning effect that improves comfort and reduces pressure on the gums. Soft relines are less durable than hard relines and may require more frequent adjustments or replacements.

Denture relining is typically performed by a dentist or a dental laboratory technician. The procedure starts with an evaluation of the existing denture and an assessment of the patient's oral condition. The dentist will take an impression of the patient's mouth using a putty-like material. This impression will serve as a mold for fabricating the new denture surface.

Once the mold is obtained, the denture is sent to a laboratory where the reline material is added. The laboratory will customize the fit and shape according to the specific needs of the patient. Upon completion, the denture is returned to the dentist, who will then ensure proper fit and functioning before delivering it to the patient.

Denture relining can significantly improve the fit, function, and comfort of existing dentures. It helps to prevent sore spots, enhance stability while speaking or eating, and alleviate the discomfort caused by loose-fitting dentures. Regular denture relining is recommended every few years or as needed to maintain optimal function and comfort.
